Colman's Mustard Advertising Tin Lamp, Bull's Head — Victorian Lithograph

The Victorians understood that a tin of mustard on every English table was an opportunity — and Colman's of Norwich dressed the occasion accordingly. This hexagonal tin carries the full lithographic program in salmon-orange and black: a seated girl cradling hops and flowers in an oval cartouche, royal warrant panels flanking her reading "Manufacturers to the Court of Holland" and "Manufacturers to the King of Italy," and the heraldic Bull's Head trade mark anchoring the bottom panel. Rotate it and the reverse face opens onto a Windsor Castle vignette with "Manufacturers to H.M. the Queen." Four sides of pageantry for a condiment. The Victorians were not doing anything halfway.

At some point — likely mid-twentieth century — someone made the obvious move and wired it for light. The tin sits on a stepped MDF base and rises through a gilt brass rod to a coordinating salmon drum shade and a turned dark-wood ball finial. It is a warm, saturated thing on a table — the kind of lamp that makes a room feel like someone actually chose it. Tested and working, accommodates a standard bulb.

CONDITION

Fair overall; fully functional and tested. The tin itself retains strong color and graphic integrity with surface scratches, scuffing, and age-appropriate wear. The MDF base shows moisture damage with significant flaking and material loss at the edges and feet. The shade is in poor condition — stained, cracked, and torn in multiple places with paint loss across the surface — and is best treated as a placeholder for a replacement.
